This painting feels like a break through for me.. It finally has a real sense of movement in the composition, and ive managed to escape the static face in the middle of the composition problem.. Looser, and more playful I guess, The line work and abstract elements take as much focus as the portraits do. more harmonious? Im not sure.. but its different, and has got me excited.
I found some ideas i’d jotted dow in my sketchbook from my USA travels earlier this year about painting and my work, I think it applies to this recent work.. so here it is.
‘Changed and augmented features for the sake of interupting normality and the predictable to offer up the idea of limitless possibilities. With too much information, the imagination has no room to play. Obscurity and violation of of the resolved give a sense of depth and history within the work.
A fatal flaw is the belief that we know what makes a good result.
The surrendering to chance, accidents and exploration in the hope for the creative power which is beyond the self or the individual will allow for new things to happen. Repetition is limbo. Repetition is comfort, routine gets us nowhere quickly. Big risks. Big wins.
Painting issues cont.
The challenge is to stay mindful of the danger of the comfort zone, repeating processes and techniques already proven to work will be unsatisfying.
Try to let the painting find its own way, the artist is mere flesh, creativity cannot be ‘created’ only tapped into.
This will allow us to make images that are legitimately new and uninhibited by the preconceived notion of what looks right or relevant.
There is no right or wrong, just different marks and different ways of connecting.
Balance between.. considered manipulation of media in a clear direction/ and/ Unconscious marks and playful painting for the sake of exploration and learning.
