Belly of the beast
(sold)
Painted this wall on the outside of ‘The Record Store’ in surry hills just off crown st. Space men in room with visors, a cape and pimp sneakers. hinting at the theme for my show coming up in sydney with the uniform..
Painted this piece the other night at ohreally gallery for culture jam. Went for some future vibes to match the futuristic beats that were being laid down by Roleo, Tobio and Jozscott from 104 collective.
Have been pushing the idea of the uniform and the role of the constructed world in a human life. Placing my figures in a room that is bare of possessions and stripped back to an unrealistic feeling proportioned shape, that implies the environment is imagined.. as abstracted and deconstructed as the facade of flesh is in the normal context my work. perhaps the uniforms, the structured patterns, grids and stripes and rooms are all just representations of the mind state.. my mind state?
I suppose.. not sure who else’s mind it could be, the new work im doing swings back in a representational direction where i am referencing photos and using real people as a starting point for the work, then adding my own layers of protection and status to the characters, in part to identify them as unique and imply a story behind the image but also to create mystery within the image and to deconstruct the formal methods of drawing and seeing. to find my own way of seeing. its still the beginning.
Funny i have always hated uniforms, school, authority and the structures of life… seems like all these things are creeping into the work with my intention.. im not sure why. but i am drawn to the uniform and the idea of security vs freedom…
anyway ill stop rambling..
My solo show in melbourne opens on the 18th of May at No Vacancy fed sq. (flier coming soon)
